The tool is arranged in a grid or matrix. "Cells" are formed from the intersection of each "row" and "column." The tool is completed by clicking on each cell and filling out the form that is then presented. The main type of cell will be to choose one or more of six selections. These selections are represented on the main screen by numbers corresponding to the six steps of a consensus risk management system developed by The Conference Board of Canada:

    1. Identify represented by [Dark Yellow ]

    2. Assess [Bright Yellow ]

    3. Measure [Green ]

    4. Respond [Aqua ]

    5. Report [Purple ]

    6. Monitor [Red ]

A 3. How should organizations actually use the tool?

Specific "tool tips" and definitions for each step are included on each screen or window of the tool. As you move your cursor over the various cells, the tool tips will display the purpose of each particular cell.

Further, here are some general guidelines and observations:

The tool is arranged in a grid or matrix. "Cells" are formed from the intersection of each "row" and "column."

The rows represent risk management areas, major types of risk or opportunity that organizations face. Some may not be applicable to each organization, and some will be much more significant than others.

The risks are organized according to The Conference Board of Canada's principle-based governance model. This is a comprehensive framework of imperatives and capabilities that boards and executives, according to research, must effectively master for governance to be strong.

The columns represent the way risk management is (or ought to be: the tool can be completed either in pro forma or current practice mode) carried out within the organization.

A4. How does risk management align with corporate governance?

A7. How do I obtain help with interpreting the results of our work with the tool?

For assistance with interpreting the results contact Pierre Vanasse at vanasse@conferenceboard.ca or (613) 526-3090, extension 345.

A8. How do I inquire about customization of the tool for my particular organization?

Customizing the CD ROM and other Custom Services

The tool presents a standard template that should be suitable for most governance and risk management applications; for example: The generic risks used for the template are those most often associated with risk management frameworks around the world.

Most users will find risks they currently use or want to use somewhere within the tool.

Not all risks are applicable to all situations. In most instances, the tool can be adapted in such cases by leaving entire rows and columns blank, or rating them as not applicable.

In other situations, the electronic tool can be fully customized. For example, your organization might require:

    • content changes to make use of its own risk management or governance terminology and frameworks;
    • customisation of the tool to reflect specific language, colours and logo requirements;
    • assistance with processes within the tool to ensure the results accurately reflects existing frameworks and processes;

other more specific governance and/or risk management counselling services. For example, assistance with implementing or adapting the tool and its underlying frameworks to individual corporate governance or risk management situations, or with interpreting the results.
